The quiet discipline of handcraft

For over fifteen years, Artchala has cut, beveled, and saddle-stitched raw hides at a single timber bench. We build everyday objects intended to outlive their first owners.

The studio stance

Hides that record honest living

We refuse synthetic backings, painted splits, and electric feed dogs. Every seam is locked with beeswaxed linen thread so no single broken stitch can ever unravel the piece.

Natural provenance

Bark, water, and time

Vegetable tanning is an ancient, patient process steeping heavy cowhides in concentrated chestnut and mimosa barks for up to two months. Unlike mineral chrome-tanned skins that stay inert, plant-tanned fibers remain receptive to skin oils, friction, and ambient sunlight.

With everyday pocket wear, natural undyed grain gradually warms from a pale sand tone into a deep amber caramel. The surface accepts personal marks and weather, transforming standard utility into an intimate heirloom with each passing season.

Bench discipline

Manual instruments of the trade

Precision leatherwork demands hand tools honed daily on Arkansas oilstones. We shape and finish edges using traditional mechanical methods.

Custom orders and workbench talk

Whether you have questions about hide selection, custom pocket dimensions, or caring for an aging piece, we answer every message personally.
